1.8 16v baleno conversion Empty 1.8 16v baleno conversion

Post  dj_russell 10/05/10, 02:06 am

right this is a deadly serious question has it been done before all parts will be avalible the end of this week, i have a mate that reakens he can do it although ive seen his work and hes extremley good and not full of crap normally, is it even possible and most of all is it worth it, cars a gls 1.3

ps its not a 17 yearold wanting to do it as a 1st car before anyone gives me the lecture like you usually get the dreamers who join forums that never do it, its only meant to be my run about while my gt4 is undergoing enginework but im bored now that i have nothing to play with and this said friend has all these parts coming up. i would like to hear the oppinion of the swift community as some of you guys really know your stuff and this friend knows his stuff but obviously has no experience of this type of engine conversion in a swift.

cheers

Hi Jim,

I have a question...
Will you be using an original Baleno gearbox?
I think drive shaft will be the bottle beck for you with this conversion.

1.8 16v has only 120Bhp.... is it worth it?
I thought it will be better to fit G13B Gti engine(105Bhp std.) in so when you are to sell Swift.
You will have more customer to buy off you as many people want to do this themselves.
As it is your run around while your Pride is getting built, I think keeping it simple and future planning will be better.

Cheers

put the swift gti engine in it ,it wud prob have the swift wiv the 1.8 as that will be that little bit heavier
for the sake of 15/25 bhp

plus the 1.8 will be front end heavy
them gti engine are only small but dont half go like fuk!
and can use some of ur bits on the swift already, like radiator/battery/brake servo(i think)

the 1.8 wont be that much heavyer
but what you gain in cc you lose in strength
g13b is prob the strongest 4pot suzuki cars made, forged crank, rods, its designed to rev high whereas the 18 isnt
i dont know how good the engines are in the new swift/ignis sports tho
i reckon the 18 would be good for low rev/pressure turbo setup where there would be alot more usable tourqe from the larger capacity

if you were to put a j 18 in your better off doing a j20 same engine bigget for gearbox you will need to make the drive shafts the j20 is found in the new vitara. gti engine with low boost turbo on a chip 170bhp

if ur 1L is only a temporary car i wudnt bother doin anything to it, save some money for your main car, but im not loaded...............

Hi,

I think he has 1.3 to be honest.
If you are so keen on doingsomething with your car....
Why don't you buy Baleno 1.6 SOHC 16v head and fit onto your G13BA engine?
I know you can do this but you might have to have valve cut out in pistons..... so engine out anyway.

I have spare G13B Gti pistons so all you need to do is buy new piston rings. Fit them to your conrods, buy a 1.6 16v head and fit onto G13BA engine block and you have almost as good 1.3 as Gti.

You should be able to do this for about £400!

duno bout that, the g13b has a very good power to weight (maybe the best) and concidering its almost unchanged, mechanicly since 86 its defo upthere wiv the great engines
but what about the 106 rallie, ax gt, starlet, all 1.3 all wiv the same performance
iv driven all of those cars in standard form and i would go for the pug everytime
ax and swift are neck`a neck, the ax is a bit flimsy but has a good rear end and the starlet is just to heavy for my liking but the turbo power makes up for it

cheers for the comments only reason for this swap is the bits are coming up really cheap and a mate who can probably do it all very cheap, if i were to go ahead with it and put it on coilovers and some better brakes for trackdays strip it completly out would i see it keeping up with the 106 gti/saxo vts/renault clio sport 172s etc???? if itll do that and not handle too badly im really keen, car will just have breathing mods full exhaust, induction nothing special done to the engine unless i take it to a trackday and i come away eager to make it faster.

what do you think??? Rolling Eyes

cheers

you will defo come away eager
i reckon the j18 will perform just a bit better than wiv the engine you have in now
its alot of effort and it still wont be as good as a g13b
yes it will have more power and torque but like i said before it will be weaker
if your gona change the engine then the g13b should be the only one, its got more potential
plus you wont have to mess around wiv custom dshafts, engine mounts
also theres the gear ratios to think of, im sure the baleno was just designed for the o.a.p crew
nice long relaxing gears Sleep

Re 1.3 production car. Ive owned 4 swift gti's an loved every minute. However, I got a starlet ep82 at the mo and It,ll smoke any of my swifts when both in standard spec. BUT by the sound of it by this forum, strap a turbo to a g13b an you got yourself a seriouse piece of kit, got no idea bout the g16 tho, lol
