I am aware this has probably been posted 400000000000000000000 times but im actually struggling to find a thread :/ Sorry

Right. i have a 1998 justy (5 door), and have been reliably informed that golf mk2 coilovers will fit the front. I understand that these are not correct for the car but i am just looking to go low. yes i understand it will ruin handling, yes i understand its 4wd its meant to be high... etc... but if its what i want to do imma do it Very Happy way i've worked for a while.

So does anone know of any coilovers off of another car that would fit the justy rear. i am not interested in damping adjustment, nor cutting springs! i simply want to be low, i fell in love with the car i have linked below a while back and he's running golf fronts... but alas! i dont know what rears :/ so any help would be appreciated Smile

BTW: i dont want to have to modify the rears minus maybe adjusting the "top hats" of the shock absorber

Hi,

I'm sure you don't need to get told no good and all that.... So...

His car looks like using smaller wheels and tyre setup.
Justy/Swift comes with 14" wheels, so if you get hold of 13" wheels. You will have 13mm lower already by wheel alone. If you get 175/50-13 which is 505mm high and compares to 165/65-14 is 570mm so You will drop your car by 32.5mm. This will be MOT failure as your speedo will read nearly 13% out.
I think old Civic used to have 13" in our PCDs may be even Daewoo Matiz had 13" wheels. So if you get hold of steel wheels out of spare in the boot, get them banded to strech tyres.
There you go.

Each to their own but make sure you have break pipe and fuel pipe protected.

Cheers

i am currently running 13" wheels and it is still silly high xD its not necessarily body height but more wheel to arch fitment if that makes any sense? (hence wanting adjustability) would i just be able to run golf rears do you reckon or not? Smile maybe worth a shot, change top hat to justy, if not ill sell em on and keep only fronts Very Happy

but i do completely get what you are saying! i will definitely keep those protected Smile

thank you!

Rear Coilovers. Empty Researched

Post  ImSteah 14/03/15, 10:02 pm

So i did a little research (20 mins on drive with a socket set) and figured, hopefully, that if i take the rear spring out and buy some coilover sleeves... i may be able to slide it over the rear shock and put a spring on there... if... if, if, if the top strut mount is strong enough to take the force. will let you all know how this goes because i know of a few people wanting to be low in these (justy's) so someone tell me please before i ruin my car if that mount will be strong enough XD

Thanks in advance Smile

The best way for your problem is to find what weight you will need to support with your rear setup.
Swift/Justy is about 750Kg.
Back end is only carrying 300Kg or so. The front will be more as you can imagine engine and gearbox is one of most heavy items in the car.
So, assuming you will need to carry 150kg all the time.... You can buy super bike setup to do thing for you.

All you need to do is weld extra material or Turret kits.

rear shock towers have proven to be unsuitable to carry the weight of the car when converted to coilover shock absorber configuration. Especially if you have to cut the outer skin to fit the springs in there...depending on spring Diameter. this can all be reinforced as per Atchi's suggestion, of course but I'm figuring if your asking these questions that's probably not feasible.
there are plenty of rear adjustable coil platforms available, choose your brand and have the rear arms modified to suit and hey presto...not much lower than a replacement spring.
Have custom springs wound and you'll have no dramas with a low car, or cut the current springs. all spring wire were originally cut from the roll.

How low do you want to go?

much lower than this?

that one  is 3 inches lowered or 75mm.
to do that custom springs front and rear, custom short stroke/body shock absorbers and cambered rear strut towers.
to go any lower is easy, just use lower again springs but don't expect it to be safe to drive as the shock absorbers if standard length will bottom out. That car has 50mm rear and 65mm front travel but also uses 16 inch wheels 205/45/16 tyres so on 13's  and little tyres the exhaust would be rubbing on speed humps. I seem to remember 75mm clearance to the lowers part of the body with the 16's.
SF series swifts never look that low without side skirts and never as low as similar aged Hondas due to sill shape and physical constraints.
The alternate would be , as Atchi pointed out, use similar rear turrets that Mk1/2 escorts have welded in to suit 5 or 6 linking which are a much heavier gauge steel. substantial welding would be necessary and look like this...but in a swift

Rear Coilovers. WP_20140609_008_zps131a5468

I don't think even 2 1/4 diameter springs will fit in the swift/justy turrets and the turret isn't designed to hold car weight (shock absorbers bare no weight only springs do) so re-turreting is necessary

Nice work there!

Seeing is easier than me telling what you need to do.
I guees you can fit MX-5 rear subframe and coil over from them wil be good also.
They have built in suspension mounts and you can carry the diff in the subframe.

Mx5 is 100mm wider than a swift in the body and 90mm wider in the track.
So to get rear lower in your justy you'll need to remanufacture the entire rear substructure of the chassis to suit a wider cars rear end which will still need to be modified to get it low as you want to go as Mx5's aren't super low. then you'll need to graft wider rear arches/flares or similar onto the rear of the 5 door to cover the wheels and you'll end up with a car 100mm wider at the rear then the front. you may find narrower or better offset rear wheels to 'tuck' them but Mx5 brakes and suspension are suited to a particular wheel shape and size so this may not suit, then you have different wheels stud patterns and too big brakes on the rear.
then looking at all that I think the justy fuel tank will need modification to suit the Mx5 subframe.
I wish you good luck with the welder and grinder.
How about modifying the rear suspension arm to have an adjustable thread collar and install a new spring in the standard space. or put the adjuster on the top spring mount (facing down) and adjust from there much easier cheaper than a coilover conversion or subframe adaption.
How are you addressing the height imbalance between front to rear. the standard swift/justy front driveshafts are at their limit when lowered 75mm much lower and they pop out?

Cheers

Like everyone says, you will need to do a lot of work in order to get a result you want.

I think sticking with a Mini will be far easier as I have made most of them myself.
MX-5 idea will work if you can make a new fuel tank and others yourself.

I have narrowed MX-5 rear subframe with mk1 setup which you can fit 13" wheels onto. But You will have different PCD to the front.
You will need to take out rear drive out and remanufacture your car.

You can only do all of this work with a spare car.

In which case... i've been thinking, my mini is up for sale. with the money from that i am looking into making the justy more of a hillclimb car. not necessarily just for that but a fast road car that would be useable for hillclimbs? is that possible/more sensible than "slamming" it?

Anything is possible as long as you have time and money.
If you are doing all of the work, you may need skill....

If you are to make your car into track day car, you can do that with 5Dr Justy.
If you want to take my adviced routes, I have my MX-5 setup you can buy cheap as I won't need them any more.

If you turbo it even with 1300cc, you can get over 300bhp from it. So it will be a fun car to have.

These days, Minis sell for good price so good luck with it.

Rear Coilovers. Empty i got low

Post  ImSteah 28/04/15, 07:27 pm

okay so not exactly on coilovers XD but i got it slammed. ish.. it currently resides, chassis wise, miles off the floor, but the arch tuck is massive.

here is a picture of the lowness & a new swift that has had a 40mm drop Smile to give a (albeit rubbish, because at this point the rear was still in the air) representation of just how low these cars can comfortably go Very Happy

so there we are Smile im trying to find a way to make it more comfortable but slow goings XD

thanks for the input haha
