Im running a bit over 200hp and yes it cost serious money, you can do it cheap but in the end you can't cut corners and you're just gonna get problems.
My advise to you before going turbo is to make it the best NA engine then drop the compression and turbo it.
Port the head, fit some of suprf1y's 210/340 cams, cultus intake with 60mm TB, 2.5" exhaust. Stand alone ECU (AEM are meant to be good), uprated ignition(i use Mallory 6AL), remote oil filter kit with hydraulic pipe fittings and oil cooler.
Also you might want to fit a Justy 4wd gearbox and lightened Justy flywheel.
Get all this done and when you turbo it, it will be something special.

Re: 200 bhp
you dont need to worry about the cultus inlet stock one is fine
vitara pistons 75mm
ebay argo or maxspeed rods
o ring the block
thats your bottom end done [dont forget the cost of bearings gaskets etc
stock head port it a little contact me if you want it done
walbro
supra turbo injectors
a fpr of your choice
60mm throttle body [i have one for sale if your intrested]
td04 of of a wrx
universal intercooler
remote filter and oil cooler
just gearbox
lightened justy fywheel
dmw dave clutch
starkey motorsport engine mounts
and a good engine managment set up
i have left out loads of stuff but im sure you will figure it out these are the main things i guestimate minimum £3000 max £5000 you will be good for 200-260bhp all day long

Re: 200 bhp
When you start reaching 200hp, the cultus inlet could be good for up to an extra 20hp.
Strider can probably get you one but he charges crazy money for them

if you`v got a chip to match im gona go with 125/30, prob more on a generous dyno
mine is 116hp 107lb, using 11.5 comp, 4-2-1 mani, 2" system, std cams and chip
but thats a 110k+ engine so its very loose

Re: 200 bhp
i got my 20hp figure from DMWDave which is very experienced with the gti. The stock inlet becomes very restrictive at 200hp.
nick c, your exhaust and TB are too big to get the most power out of your engine, but when you turbo it they will work great. I use the 210/340 cams in my turbo swift and they are amazing, by far the best upgrade since the turbo.
I've also just fitted a Mallory 6AL ignition and coil upgrade which has gave it even more power above 6000rpm

no he doesnt, but he has tested them and that was the result. The cultus isnt the best inlet but is a sight better than the stocker

Re: 200 bhp
i got a cultus mani not to long ago, it needed a bit of work so i got it a bit cheaper than the norm, but i was showing my boss, he designs all of the extraction systems at work so he knows a bit about air movement, he rekons it gets better airflow coz its got a round plenum not a square like the gti mani, less surface area to cause friction on the air, plus its not cast so its smoother internaly aswell

Re: 200 bhp
thanks for the input guys, i think i will probably go straight in and turbo it i just dont know wich route to take, theres really 3 options i can see, option 1- bolt on turbo kit from starkey, option 2- turbo kit plus all the other bits like what stevegti suggested for serious power or option 3- buy the ready prepared engine from starkey motorsport,

Re: 200 bhp
to be honest mate your best just bolting on a turbo kit and starting form there then you can take it in smaller steps

Re: 200 bhp
you dont need to buy a whole turbo engine, your head is already to go, you just need some low comp pistons in the bottom end and the engine side of things is complete.
I use vitara pistons, they work very well

Re: 200 bhp
are vitara pistons the same diameter or do the bore's need to be re-bored. and can anyone tell me if my stock engine managment will be fine to run the bolt on turbo kit.

Re: 200 bhp
you will need to get the block bored for the pistons, and you can either go the cheap route and buy a turbo chip or do it properly and by a standalone ecu along with bigger injectors and some dyno time.
If theres any dyno tuners near you, find out what ECU's they work with and get one of them, will make your life a bit easier

Re: 200 bhp
Hey nick I genuinely think that if your serious then you need engine management to save any disappointment. You could buy a chip but the car won't be 100%, and I don't think ul be that happy with the results.
Anyway what I guess I'm saying is if your going to do it, do it right the first time around so you don't have to look back
