gearbox woes
Hi, I have just changed my gearbox as my old one went bang. Its a good one but Im beginning to think its not a gti box as it seems to have slowed my swift down a fair bit. Is there any external faetures that you could tell from? I did notice there was one less mounting hole that should stick out from the bottom of the bellhousing. Any ideas?

Re: gearbox woes
i dont know about markings, but if the gear ratios are different then it isnt a gti box, what revs are you doing in 5th at 60mph?

re geabox woes
Okay so I have just stripped my old box (in the hope I can rebuild it).
This is what I have found; The gear that bolts to the diff has teeth missing.
The gear that meshes with that is completly stripped. (is this the cwp?).
One of the bearings on the shaft that drives the box has started to break up.
Thats about it, what I need to know is can you buy these gears? who from and is it going to be very expensive? Are the bearings standard sizes (might be able to get them from work).
Also before the box gave up it crunched a little changing down into 3rd and 2nd yet the syncro's looked ok (to me, maybe i dont know what to look for).
lastly, can you just buy a rebiuld kit? thanks ppl

Re: gearbox woes
its alot of work, but if you have the right tools the cheapest way to do it would be to get a good 3cyl box
you can use the 4.4 cwp from there gti is 4.1
you can use all the bearings, syncros, shift forks, selector shaft and 1st+2nd gears if you need them
i would use new main and diff bearings though, just to be sure

Thanks, So the 1.0l cwp should improve acceleration a bit and 1st and 2nd gears are the same as the gti box? Ive got hold of diff bearings and driven shaft bearings already. Ive stripped the gears off the pinion shaft and on closer inspection the syncro teeth on 2nd are quite worn but the brass ring teeth looks ok so I dont understand how it was crunching. But if the 1.0l gears can be used it shouldnt matter.

Re: gearbox woes
1st of all get a factory manual, it has all you need to know
or go on teamswift and they have the full gbox section to download
there is a tool you have to get from suzuki to take off 5th easyily
1st and 2nd are the same, you can use the inputshaft and reverse aswell but you will have to change the 3rd+4th gears on it

Re: gearbox woes
Hi,
I got a spare mk2 Gti gearbox in excellent condition.
I have imported from Japan and I think the owner was very heavy right foot so diff pin is not very good. I was going to fit mk1 cross pin diff in and sell it.
Let me know if you are interested but it won't be cheap £250 plus p+p.
Cheers

Tidy, Ive already stipped my box so wont need a tool for 5th gear (the box had locked up) Ive studied the guide on teamswift and should ok to get it back together. Thanks for the help.
Oh and £250 is a bit steep for a gearbox but thanks all the same atchi

I've always found that rev's are exactly half the speed in 5th gear.
60mph -3000rpm
70mph -3500rpm
80mph -4000rpm etc till around 90/95mph when the revs climb. Maybe even 100+mph, been so long since i drove the car i cant remenber
Is that just me?

Im running 15's with 195-50's . And getting 2500 rpm at 60 and 3000 rpm at 70. This isnt right for a gti box is it? I never considered wheel dia.

Re: gearbox woes
it doesnt make any difference what size tyres youve got, the speedo will still read the same speed to revs, the only thing that will change is your actual GPS speed

Re: gearbox woes
exactly, the spedo worm drive is on the diff
the wheel size only effects the actual speed not the spedo speed, if that makes sense

re gearbox woes
Update, just got hold of two gti box's for the price of one, Ones good the other was crunching into 1st and second. Only trouble is the seller didnt know which ones which lol. So the plan is to try and work out which is the good one (somehow) and rebiuld the other one with bits from my old one as a spare.
Anyone know where I can buy second gear from as I think thats the only bit Ill need?
