The Honey Badger
Hi from Barbados, had me an account but can't remember the username so made a new one.
My 98 GTi. It'll be a slow build. Basically I'm building it so it is comfortable enough to drive daily if need be but still be peppy enough to take to the track and enjoy every minute of hunting the bigger boys.
Here it is when I brought it home.

Re: The Honey Badger
I had gearbox issues little while after I bought the car so I got me another proper working gearbox with no issues and decided to treat this gearbox with love since it was in good shape. Installed it with new throw-out bearing and I now use Redline MTL gearoil only.
Bought - Two front bottom arms, timing belt & tensioner, all crank and cam seals and all disty seals. Plus new fuel filter, oil filter and some Valvoline 20W50. (Not all shown)
Gutted the interior for cleaning and rust prevention.. The previous owner used it as a company car so the interior wasn't in the best shape and everything was soaked in dust like they never gave it an interior clean
After cleaning..
Found couple holes. One in the driver side foot well, the other by the rear wiper. Got one patched, the other will be patched when I replace the rear glass rubber. Also replaced the rear interior panels from a crashed car because the ones my car came with was scratched and bruised up pretty bad
Then got me some B&G lowering springs and front Koni yellows
And some fogs

Re: The Honey Badger
looks alright scrap th 1.6 idea the cranks are poop they dont rev and parts are pricey theres a reason one realy builds them lol you can make that on the 1.3 might need a slighly bigger turbo vf22 is ideal t28 is good for 350 flywheel on a 1.0 these little things aint got enough gas
good luck with the build look foward to it

Re: The Honey Badger
The reason I was going the 1.6 route was I wouldn't need to boost the hell out of it to get the 300hp mark. Was aiming for the 300 mark just to see what that much in such a light car feels like. If I stay 1.3L most I'll aim for is 250hp just for the fun of it. What I was thinking is the track we have here is very small, narrow and tight so too much at only the front wheels might cause too much wheelspin issues. So 200-250 mark is the most I'll go with if I stick with the 1.3L block which will most likely happen. I know these numbers can be had from 10-20psi on the 1.3L
There is a drag sedan running 26psi at 410hp on a basic 1600 block with aftermarket con rods and worked GTi head. So I guess the crank isn't as bad as some say.

Re: The Honey Badger
Air filter needed a change so I went the open element route...Maf adapter
Local aftermarket store was out of stock on K&N filters so I got me a cheapy until they got back stock
Installed with some homade bracing since the factory rubber piping can't support the filter's weight
OEM unit out
Getting ready to dismantle the turbo to assess the damage
Dismantled the turbo to see if salvageable....So the tear down began
Didn't get the turbine housing off due to a stubborn bolt in a tight to get at position, but from looking it seems the housings weren't damaged that severely....The chra has an inch of play atleast in any direction I push it... The previous owner said he found all the bearing balls from the chra in his sump...He also told me all the problems started when his car overheated one day....I guess it is true that the ball bearing chras are quite delicate

Re: The Honey Badger
Little update
Had me a 6lb aluminum flywheel but sold it to a buddy who wanted it more than I did
Magnecor 8.5mm Leads
OMP strut brace
Will need tires soon...Going to use the opportunity to upsize to 15s from the 14s I currently run on...
That's all for now

Re: The Honey Badger
Little update...
Aeromotive FPR to go along with the Forsa fuel rail..need to decide how to mod the rail to delete the stock fpr and maybe the pulsation damper.
Then ordered Wilwood brackets from Garndi over on redlinegti
Advertized pic
Package appeared at my house
And its contents ..... Well made product, couldn't be happier
Also ordered some Subaru STi toe bars a while back
and got some 15" wheels around the same time
Next I will try to remove the strut brace to get a bracket welded to it for the fpr to mount on and send that, a cam cover and the wheels for sandblasting and powder coating..Then with the fpr on I can get the new 2.5" exhaust installed for when the turbo goes on.
Have to decide on what tires to run but I'm in between Kumho KU15
OR Kumho KU36

Re: The Honey Badger
Coming along nicely. Looking forward to seeing this progress.
But tell me more about those Subaru toe bars? Are they a direct fit? Or what mods are needed to make them fit?
Thanks man, and good luck

Re: The Honey Badger
Recent update:
Wheels sandblasted
Powdercoated
New Kumho KU36 tires
On her new shoes
The original downpipe was a 2.5" main and 1.5" wastegate that merged into a 3" outlet, and the guy who had the kit before me was running a G16 motor and he modified the downpipe quiet poorly to fit...I plan on running 2.5" the most. I decided to cut the downpipe where it merges to go 3" so now its just a 2.5" main and 1.5" wastegate.....Thinking if to leave the wastegate port open for a screamer pipe and run the 2.5" main to the rest of the exhaust
Got the other book for turbocharging from the same guy...Now I have both
Megan Racing M-Spec II 2.5" Muffler
Had to buy a new alternator...Old one was giving out....Rebuilt the old one and put it oneside as a spare...This is the new one
HIDs 8000K
Compared to the Super White Fog light bulbs
OEM P/S kit
New battery...Stinger SPP1200 Dry Cell Battery...1200 Cranking Amps!
Installing the battery box
New lugs
Installed
More to come.....

Re: The Honey Badger
I was using Webshots Image Hosting website to house my pics instead of having them on my pc....They recently changed their site to Smile something and it seems like I have lost all the links to the images I had on their site..Luckily I had problems with webshots before and decided to transfer most my pics to Photobucket and good thing I did. So when I get a chance I'll go back through the recent posts and re-add the pics via Photobucket....
P.S I need to invest in an external hard drive

Well if that's the case more will be added but the plan is to find a Swift Sport gearbox and install the sportier gear ratios into my gearbox....There is a local drag scene here now getting started that seems to be quite fun albeit only 1/8 mile strip for now...Thinking if to go for the all out HP and built to suit that instead .... Will see how the year goes
I edited the thread to add back in the pics where needed
Cheers

Re: The Honey Badger
Bought a spare block w/ vitara pistons & total seal gapless piston rings, stock rods, o-ringed cylinder deck & crankscraper
Disassembled it
Crankscraper
Then got a SuzukiRD block guard
Then disassembled the 1600 gearbox to change out the bearings before I do the swap
Plan to send the gearbox housing to get sandblasted and powdercoated
Cleaned up and lubricated the shifter
Got a fibreglass front lip made
Will be coating it in Black Plastidip...Awesome product
Donor car...Turbocharged 1.6l 16v...Will be selling what I'm not using
The main things I bought it for
Cultus manifold w/ 60mm throttle body
Another 1600 gbox
Double Diaphragm pressure plates, ACT Solid 4-puck disc and the ever soo hard to find Suzuki Baleno 1.6L flywheel that's wayyy lighter than the original swift sedan flywhel....We usually lighten the suzuki baleno flywheel to 10lbs here
AEM Boost control solenoid
Engine mount cores..Will be sending them to be converted to solid rubber
That's all for now
