hi people, may aswell make a bit of an intro, my name is Ben and i'm from middlesbrough. I've been a big fan of the swift gti since my dad bought one new in 1990 when i was 10. when i turned 17 i bought it off him, modded it a bit and generally loved it to bit's. it ended up being pretty rotten but i gave it to my girlfriend with the intention of doing it up when she passed her test. anyway, she passed her test, the gti was beyond repair so she got another car....but we kept a load of the 90 gti bits with the intention of one day building a gti replica with all the parts (including ph1 dash etc) i also broke a few gti's when i owned it as i was always needing spares so we put all these parts to one side.

well now, many years later, the swift project is about to begin (have half attempted a few times but this time i'm deffinately going to do it) we just bought a (rough but not rusty) 02 plate 1.0 swift, ripped all the body and interior out and started repainting it white.

we will be using all of the body/chassis/interior parts i have saved (including koni's, virtually new janspeed exhaust etc, but engine wise i've decided to put in a Honda VTEC engine, so all the engine and engine related parts are going to be sold. (we can discuss my reasoning in another thread if anyone feels the need to vent off about why i shouldn't, as i know theres a few honda haters in the swift community Laughing )

i haven't researched prices yet, i want what the parts are worth but i'm not out to rip anyone off, any suggestions of price would be great.

2xgti gearboxes, one is out of my own gti, perfect, other is out of a crashed 80k ish miles car and both have been stored for over 10 years (with oil still in)

gti engine...complete and runs, about 100k, was my own engine and very fast but last time we started it before we stripped the car we had a problem with one of the core plugs in the head popping out....i might have jb welded one in i cant really remember.....will have a look...also, driver side mount, one lug snapped and others stripped, made up a bracket that bolts to front of engine, drove car for ages like this and was fine.

gti head, removed from block as cambelt was snapped (car hit from side ticking over at junction) i thought there'd be damage but it was fine. done about 80k

gti bottom end, this is the block the head above was removed from, again, 80k ish

ph1 ecu with bbr starchip gp n, increased rev limit and deffinately a noticable improvement over standard.

janspeed manifold, will check condition, but i think its mint.

gti starters, alternators, throttle bodies, etc etc

cheers all, i'll make a thread about the vtec swift at some point soon

i dont see anything wrong with fitting a vtec in a swift, they are very efficient engines

i think the prices you put up for the engine and gbox are a bit steep steve Razz

thanks for the link, hadn't seen that one yet.

yeah easy to get the same power from turboing a gti, but i'm more of an naturally aspirated fan, and a firm believer that the best power curve for a high hp fwd car is one that uses revs rather than bottom end torque to make power. I've had a 300-350 bhp fwd sunny gti with a gtir forged engine which wasn't as quck on the roads as my similarly weighted 260hp aprox fwd k20 integra type R which manages to put every single one of its horses to the ground to great effect.

once i get a b16 mounted and it's all working i can easily swap it for a 200hp b18, lsd boxes easy to find, great choice of gear ratio's, OEM reliability, don't need any ecu tuning, dont need to warm up or cool down a turbo, i can rag it all day long and if it goes pop new engines are easy to find............plus, if i did want a turbo, i'd still do the honda conversion and run 400hp on a stock block, again, if it blows i can bang another stock engine out of a scrap yard in for a couple of hundred quid.

as far as all the work doing it goes, i'm wanting this kind of project......i've done too many bolt in conversions....i want a bit of a challenge.

upto now i have spent £150 on the swift, i'll probably get the steel i need for nothing, have all the honda parts laying about......in fact i'll probably get more back for my old gti engine's and boxes than my total cost....the only thing i can think that will cost me anything will be getting drive shafts made.

don't worry, i'm going to bastardise a few more swifts before i'm done aswell.......future plans include a s2000 engined rwd justy, and maybe another honda powered awd just using crv gearbox, and i also want to try my k20 in a really light chassis so i may do a k20 one in the future.

i'm not really looking for the 'best way to make power in a swift'.........i'm looking for a really light chassis for a honda engine, and since i love the looks of the mk2 ph1, then it seems the ideal choice.

k20 been done aswell in a swift theres a build vid for this car aswell
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yZznd-FqEg
personally my favorite car in the world to look at is a ek hatch cant beat em but i dont want to join the heard have to be different Smile

its all well and good having a light chassis for a honda motor but swifts struggle to put down 200hp fwd all round the hondas better for big power traction wise but if ya want point and go by all means away you go keep us updated
