gearbox problem
picked up my gearbox from a gearbox centre in my local area and when installed the mechanic sed it were grinding, as if it were tryin to selct two gears at once????????
the problem was my diff pin had come loose and worn a slit into the casing (bellhousing i think is the correct term?)had a diff from dominater installed(thanks by the way) and used the large section of the casing i had off him aswell and they installed it all back together
they sed the gearbox apart from the pin coming loose was in mint condition
all they installed was the new pin the diff and a new front oil seal
so im wondering what the problem is
garage charged 70 quid fitting
g/b centre charged 150 and cost of case etc
all together not happy!!!!!
anyone help?

Re: gearbox problem
Ask the place if there were any left over parts when they rebuilt the box.
Maybe a washer?.

Re: gearbox problem
sounds like the end plate/spacer washer not been fitted right....
the main input shalf will have movement if its not fitted correctly causing the mess to not select just right...

Re: gearbox problem
you should of weld the pin on the diff instead of buying a new one cause it will only cum out after time its a fault in them i welded the pin in my diff an found its alot better an had no problem since but the only thing i dont have a proper gti gearbox cause the pin came out throught the casing an busted everyting an all the teeth on the gears were f***ked but got a 1.3 gearbox but its the same set up but different ratios but i want a gti gearbox but getting hard 2 find but hopefully i will cum across one before i finish rebuilding the swift
Re: gearbox problem
Hi,
Yes mk2 diff pin is hold in by rolled pin which can come out.
I have drilled and tapped diff housing to take a machine down M6 grub screw.
Then I have assembled with thread lock so it will stay there.
I think best option will be to fit mk1 diff with spacers. mk1 has cross pins with 4 planet gears instead of 2 gears.
Let me know if you want a mk1 diff, I have 4 in my spare box!
Cheers

Re: gearbox problem
when re-building my gearbox the pin was pretty far out, close to coming out completely, lucky I opened it up when i did. when i hammered the pin back in i carried on hammerng the entrance hole until it shaped the metal so the pin can't come out. Sorted!
