oil light
After about 5 mins or so of driving the swift hard the oil light has started to come on/ flicker on tickover. As soon as you rev above 1000 rpm or so it goes out. If you take your time then it dosnt happen. Im hoping its just due an oil change and not engine wear but what do you reckon?

Oh and forgot to add ive checked the obvious oil level and thats fine. Although ive topped it up quite often lately but it does get driven hard regularly

not good. Whats the chances of it being an oil pump problem or thin/ old oil, maybe filter. I dont fancy pulling the motor out only just fitted the gearbox (for the second time). It still pulls well and goes like f$*k.
I cant afford to rebuild Ill prob try an find a second hand motor

Re: oil light
if it is shaged, then as long as your happy the engine your putting in is good, thats the cheapest option mate
theres no point swaping a worn engine for another
a good rebuild of all the rings gaskets seals and bearings, if needed, will cost over 600 the biggest sting is the valve guides, they aint cheap
and thats only if you do most of the work yourself

Re: oil light
do a oil pressure check first if thats low then
take off sump and remove one end cap if its ok put it back then remove the gurdle and main caps and check the bearings. you have to take them all off on a swift together. oil pumps rarely go on these
steve
p.s what ever oil your using i dont recomend use 15w 50

Also found a new fault, when the headlights are on low beam they dim right out on tickover and get brighter as you rev it. full beam doesnt do this? Have i got an earthing problem maybe related to the oil light or is this some thing completly different?
What thread size is the oil pressure switch, may be able to get a psi gauge from work that would do the job

The headlights never did that before and they dont dim until the oil light comes on which is about 5 mins after startup. Im hoping its some kind of electrical fault now coz the second the oil light comes on the headlights go out and when it flickers so do the headlights in exact timing.
Unless the light is coming on coz of wear and the headlights are affected by chance
Im gonnna check the oil pressure tho to be sure. And ill go through the earths aswell.

Re: oil light
the cable for the pressure switch go`s up along the same route as the lights on the o/s could be something up there, but if that was the case then it would happen all the time
it seems a bit strange that the oil light comes on when its warmed up
when did you last flush and change the oil/filter?
i couldnt use the sidelights in my old gti as the main units used to flicker

Thanks for your help guy but its developed a knock from the bottom end now so it was knackered after all . I think ive never noticed the lights dimming before because ive never had the oil light on in running conditions before (the two must be linked by short somehow). Picking up a used engine next weekend

Re: oil light
I've got a rebuilt engine in the swift I am running now. It has only done 13k. I will be breaking it some time later this year and I only want £200 for the engine. Bear this in mind for later n e 1.

Have flushed the engine out and changed the oil (which was very thin) and filled with 15w 40 with new fiter and the oil lights gone out and engine sounds much better. Guess I really should service my cars more often lol.
But anyway its for sale on pistonheads if anyones interested, time to start a new project.
