Close Ratio Gears
Hi all,
I have a hillclimb/sprint mk2 gti with a gripper plate LSD which is just about due a rebuild.
Is there any combination of parts I can use to get a closer set of gears without forking out a couple of grand for a dogbox? My gearing is far too long at the moment and closer gears would make a HUGE difference.
Any ideas? I'm open to any suggestions
Phil

Re: Close Ratio Gears
Hi, the only cheap way is to use the 4.4 cwp from early 3cyl cars, all swift 1st/2nd are the same gti has a better 3/4/5, there is a conv using a 1.6 baleno box ( if you can find one) in which you can fit a 04- swift sport gearset that are much more usable
Theres also an adapter plate which you can use vauxhal "f" type boxes

Re: Close Ratio Gears
Is there any difference in strength of using the 3cyl CWP or are they the same as the GTI just lower ratio?
What are the advantages of using the vauxhall gearbox? is it done for strength or availability or for ratio difference?
Many Thanks
Phil

Re: Close Ratio Gears
The 3cyl is 4.4 slightly thinner and the teeth are more angled, gti is 4.1, theres a pic in my fickr somewhere, just click on the swift link at the bottom of this post
The vaux box is stronger plus as there were alot more nova rally cars in this part of the world theres more/cheaper options for gearsets and diffs, plus its stronger, if you make enough room you could even fit a 6 speed from a calibra :-)
The only downside is youl have to make some new mounts and get some custom dshafts made

Re: Close Ratio Gears
Seems like the 4.4 is the easiest way to go, and re-reading my class rules the only legal option too. Was the 4.4 in any particular age/model in the UK? Or were all the 1litre 3 cylinder swifts the same?

Hi,
Modern G10 993cc engine swifts are 4.1:1 as Gti.
What you want is 89-93ish time G10 Swift.
Cheers
