If you use a stand alone ECU then you can keep your 8V wiring for everything other than the engine bay / ancillaries. But you will need to make / buy a wiring loom to fit the GTI engine, I think Adaptronic may sell one for the GTI engine.

I have had a few megasquirts and they are brilliant they can do just about anything you could want from an ECU.
What makes you say they are shite ?
Have you had one ?
What are / were the problems you have had ?
you do not have to assamble them yourself but you have the option if you want to, and you can save lots of money if you have the ability.
You can buy a fully built unit for £300 including a colour coded wiring loom from a UK based guy.
